The Network of Civil Society Organization (NECSOB), Borno State, yesterday in Abuja said Boko Haram insurgents killed 40,000 people and displaced about three million others.

Chairman, NECSOB, Ahmed Shehu, said this at a media briefing to commemorate the 2019 World Humanitarian Day.

He said the casualties were usually soft targets, innocent victims and aids workers.

“The humanitarian community lost over 50 aids workers, majority were local actors who sacrificed their comfort and lives for others to live,” he added.

“We are urging security agencies to enhance security arrangement that will ensure that local actors are supported in reaching out to the affected population. We also call on the UN agencies and other partners to provide insurance cover to the local civil society they are partnering,” he said.

While commending the security agencies in the country for their relentless efforts in securing and protecting the nation’s territorial sovereignty, he sympathised with the victims’ families.

He urged all relevant agencies “to enhance and ensure quick dispensation of the severance packages of the fallen heroes to motivate upcoming generation to be in the frontline to defend humanity.”

According to him, the 2019 World Humanitarian Day focuses on celebrating women humanitarians and their undying contributions to making the world a better place.

The Executive Director, Women In the New Nigeria and Youth Empowerment Initiative, Mrs Lucy Yunana, urged the Federal Government to continue rebuilding the northeast and provide a special subvention for the zone. (Daily Trust)
