The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State chapter, has dismissed claims that its chairman, Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed, has been removed from office, describing the development as unconstitutional and without legal effect.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the association said a group of individuals had circulated a purported announcement claiming to have ousted the chairman.
However, the leadership insisted that the action violated the association’s constitution and due process requirements.
“The so-called removal is unlawful and a clear breach of the constitutional provisions guiding the election and tenure of officers,” the statement said.
“At no point were these provisions followed, rendering the action null and void.”
The NMA maintained that Dr Saheed, who was elected by the association’s general membership, remains the legitimate office holder and continues to discharge his duties.
The association further advised members and the public to disregard any directives or communications from unauthorised persons or groups, stressing that such actions lack institutional recognition.
It also disclosed that steps were being taken to address the situation, including the possibility of legal action to safeguard the integrity of the body.
Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law and democratic principles, the NMA called on members to remain calm and focused on its core mandate of promoting professional standards and protecting public health.
The development signals a potential leadership dispute within the Lagos chapter of the association, although details about the group behind the alleged removal remain unclear.
The association said further updates would be communicated through its official channels. (Nigerian Tribune)
