Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has raised concerns over the increasing spate of insecurity in northern Nigeria, suggesting a link between escalating terror attacks and political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sani, in an X post shared on Wednesday, said the pattern of violence during election cycles was too consistent to be ignored.

“Each time an election comes closer, you will see an upsurge in daring terror attacks that were never experienced earlier in the North. That can’t be a coincidence,” he said.

He further alleged that those responsible for such attacks could be identified through their reactions.

“There’s no name attached to it, but by their statements after every attack, you can fish them out,” he added.

The former lawmaker described the exploitation of insecurity for political gain as “one of the most tragic and devilish political strategy,” warning that such actions have grave consequences for the country.

“Playing the terror Chess cards with the aim of politically benefiting from it is one of the most tragic and devilish political strategy by the enablers and perpetrators. They are burning the farm in order to own the land,” Sani stated.

His comments come amid similar concerns raised by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, who recently linked spikes in terrorism to political developments.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, Musa said recent attacks appear to follow a pattern tied to the political calendar.

“The last time was about three bomb blast in a particular day. To tell you that those things were targeted, it probably has to do with politics because if you notice, anytime is a political year, it goes up,” he said.

He suggested that some actors may be exploiting insecurity to undermine the government.

“Individuals want to take advantage to make the government look weak or to show that there’s no need keeping the government,” the minister added.

When asked who might be behind such acts, the minister said, “Anybody who does not mean well for the country and there are a lot of them, both within and outside.” (Vanguard)
