A monitoring team of European Union and UNICEF have visited three Local Government Areas in Anambra State where it has instituted health project sites to monitor its operational modus and foster ways for sustainability.
The local government areas visited by the team in company of both the state and Federal Government representatives include Aguata, Nnewi North and Idemili South.
Speaking during the inspection tour, the UN representative, Mrs. Kate Kenebi, expressed joy at the level of work done and called on stakeholders to take ownership of the projects by expanding them.
She however expressed regret that progress at Obizi community in Aguata LGA was hindered because of erosion devastation in the area.
According to her, the exercise is aimed at ensuring healthy living, through its ‘WASHCOM’ programme which includes proper hand washing, provision of good drinking water and putting an end to open defecation.
Earlier in his speech, the state Commissioner for Public Utilities, Mr. Emeka Ezenwanne, thanked EU and UNICEF for choosing Anambra State for their health projects.
The Commissioner, who was represented by Acting Director, Rural Water and Sanitation (RUWASA), Mr. Victor Ezekwuo, promised proper maintenance, usage and effective management of the projects.
A representative from National Planning, Abuja, Mr. Ikem Azubuike, also harped on need for proper maintenance as well as making effective use of the projects to generate funds.
On his part, the Transition Committee Chairman of Aguata LGA, Mr. Eche Ezeibe, hailed the EU and UNICEF for coming to their aid, describing the Obizi erosion located within Obizi community as one of their major challenges.
