NEMA confirms Lagos ship explosion

Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the explosion, at the Tin Can Island Port of Lagos, of a ship carrying petroleum products.

The ship carrying exploded this morning and caught fire at the busy port located in Nigeria’s South-West. The vessel is believed to belong to the downstream operator, MRS Petroleum.

A NEMA official confirmed the incident in a message just posted on the organisaton’s Facebook message.

“Businesses in the area, particularly affected buildings, have closed shop to avoid causalities as fire fighters battle the fire,” the official said.
