National President of NDYFGG, Comr Lucky OO Ukueku
The Niger Delta Youth For Good Governance (NDYFGG) has thrown its weight behind former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent statement on the state of the nation’s economy.
Speaking in Abuja on Friday, the National President of the group, Comr. Lucky O.O Ukueku, described Obasanjo’s remarks at the Financial Times Africa Summit 2026 in London as “truthful, patriotic and a reflection of the reality on the streets.”
Recall that Obasanjo had accused President Bola Tinubu of making Nigerians 300 percent poorer through the devaluation of the naira from about N500 to N1,500 to a dollar, turning Nigeria into the poverty capital of the world.
Ukueku said the NDYFGG aligns completely with the former President’s position.
“We in the NDYFGG have said it before and we are saying it again, President Tinubu’s hasty economic reforms have impoverished Nigerians. Chief Obasanjo is 100% correct,” he said.
According to him, the evidence is in the market.
“Today, a bag of rice that was N35,000 is now over N80,000. Fuel that was N250 is now over N1,250. Transport, food, rent and school fees have tripled, while salaries remain the same. The statistics are not in the office of the Minister of Finance, the statistics are on the street,” he stated.
The NDYFGG President further rejected the argument that Tinubu needs more time to complete his reforms, echoing Obasanjo’s question on whether Nigerians should continue to endure impoverishment.
“A reform without a human face, a reform that does not first curb corruption, wastefulness and luxury in government, is not a reform. It is punishment. Nigerians are hungry, angry and hopeless,” Ukueku said.
He therefore called on the Federal Government to urgently rethink its economic policies and put the people first.
“We stand with Chief Obasanjo and we stand with the suffering masses of Nigeria,” he added.
