Abia Speaker, Rt Hon Chikwendu Kalu
A 28-room office complex housing constituency offices of the 24 lawmakers of the Abia State House of Assembly has been inaugurated by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
The project was conceived and started by the immediate past administration of Governor Theodore Orji with four Speakers of the House supervising it.
The building was completed under the just ousted Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Azubuike.
The imposing edifice was started under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu and was inherited by Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu from whom Azubuike, who was removed from office on December 28, 2016, took over.
The fully furnished office complex was, however, inaugurated on Friday under the watch of the new Speaker of the Sixth Abia House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chikwendu Kalu, who emerged the chairman of the Assembly same day.
Inviting the Governor to inaugurate the office complex, Kalu said: “Under the watch of Ikpeazu, this edifice has been completed and it becomes incumbent on you as the sponsor to commission the office complex.”
Performing the inauguration, Ikpeazu said he was delighted to perform the function as the building would provide space for people to enjoy dividends of democracy.
“This particular function is unique in the sense that, for me, it is a house for Abia people because constituency offices representing the 24 state constituencies we have in Abia State is the true sample of the entire strata of Abia society, and if you build a house or offices where their affairs will be discussed, determined and interest protected, it means you have provided enabling environment for dividends of democracy to reach our people.”
He acknowledged the huge contributions of the administration of former Governor Theodore Orji towards realising the project, saying the government largely funded the project.
He expressed gratitude to God for his own administration the opportunity and privilege to complete the project.
“It is my prayer that as members of the Abia State House of Assembly sit and occupy and engage and use these offices, that they will do so to the glory of God, that they will do so in peace and not in rancour, that they will do so in the ambience and environment that will bring dividends of democracy down to the grassroots, that all efforts that will be deployed, all resources that will be deployed, all thoughts that will go on in these offices, collectively and individually, will be to the glory of God and to the benefits of Ndi Abia in general,” the Governor said.
