A 35 years old driver of commercial tricycle, popularly referred to as "Keke Marwa", has been reportedly murdered after a fight with a colleague driver in Surulere area of Lagos.
The incident occurred last Saturday when the two drivers brushed each other while negotiating the popular Fadeyi/Akerele junction in the area.
An eye witness account has it that, the two drivers, Anietie Bassey and Innocent Christian Chuks, who were driving in opposite directions resorted to a scuffle.
“ Anietie lifted Chucks high up and landed him on the tarred street. Chucks who resides in the area then called on his neighbours for help. Chucks’ helpers held unto Anietie and Chucks used that opportunity to pick up a hammer and hit it five times on Anietie’s head. Anietie fell down and died on the spot,” narrated an eye witness.
The body of Anietie Bassey , a father of three children between the ages of six and two, who lost his wife to death during the birth of their last child has been deposited at the mortuary while the killer driver, Innocent Chucks, is currently under detention at Area C Police Headquarters, Surulere, Lagos.
A police source informed News Express that the police was planning to conduct an autopsy on the dead after the sallah holiday before taking the case to court.
Also speaking to News Express, the leader of Akwa Ibom and Cross River (AkwaCross) community in Lagos, Etubom Sampson said his organization is not keen in pursuing the matter in court since that will not bring back their member to life.
“Our major concern right now is the welfare of those little children and the deceased aged mother. Anietie was the breadwinner of the family, he struggled alone after his wife’s death two years ago to single handedly bring up the children, including his younger brother and sister. We want the killer to bury our brother and compensate the young family for the upbringing of the children. But if he refuses to cooperate, then we shall have no choice than to allow justice take its course,” said Sampson.
Efforts made to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos for his reaction was not successful as the line was not reachable as at the time of filing this report.
