Anambra Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue
Fake beggars who disguise as alms seekers for an under-aged sick girl were on Thursday arrested in Awka by the Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue.
The beggars were picked at Nnamdi Azikiwe University temporary site junction while seeking alms from unsuspecting public with a minor whose stomach was covered with plaster, cellotape and ink.
The Commissioner said that the ongoing arrest of beggars in the state was aimed at sanitising the state and riding the state of mentally challenged people and beggars.
While parading Fake Beggars in her Office in Awka, Lady Mezue said that the arrested fake Beggars who operate under the name, Rescue Helpers People Foundation Incorporated, were in the business of using children for alms across the state.
She regretted that most of the beggars in the state are from the neighbouring states, adding that her Ministry in Collaboration with the Caring Family Enhancement Initiative of the Wife of the Governor train people who are unemployed at the various skill acquisition centres, after which they will be empowered to be self reliant.
The Commissioner warned that nobody has any reason to be begging along the road.
The Mother of one of those arrested, Mrs. Uju Obiekwe from Ihiala Council Area said that she joined the syndicate after the death of her husband saying that they pay her N1,500 daily.
