Wounded Lance Corporal Gbonogbe Mensewon
A soldier of the Nigerian Army has sustained machete wounds after being attacked by suspected local residents in Bukuru town, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, while two civilians were injured by gunshots during the incident.
Security sources said the incident occurred at about 5:45 p.m. on October 29, 2026, prompting troops of Sector 6, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), deployed at Bukuru, to respond to reports of an assault on a soldier and shooting involving civilians.
The sources said troops arrived at the scene and found Lance Corporal Gbonogbe Mensewon with machete wounds to his chest, stomach and head.
Two civilians were also found with gunshot wounds.
The injured soldier was evacuated to ECWA Hospital, Bukuru, where he was stabilised before being referred to Bingham Hospital, Jos, for further medical attention.
The two civilians were subsequently evacuated to Plateau Hospital, where they were receiving treatment.
The soldier's rifle was recovered and is currently in military custody.
The attack is the latest in a series of reported hostilities of some residents towards troops deployed to maintain peace and security in communities affected by recurring violence in parts of Plateau State. (Zagazola, excluding headline)
