The suspects being paraded by the police in Lagos
By DEBORAH AKPEDE
The Police Command in Lagos State has detained four officers captured in a viral video allegedly harassing a young man in Odoguyan area of Ikorodu, pending disciplinary proceedings.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Friday night.
Adebisi said the officers were identified as personnel attached to a tactical team operating in the area following an investigation into the video.
She said the officers were summoned to the office of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, on Friday, where the decision to detain them was taken.
“The verdict was that these officers would be detained immediately, pending disciplinary proceedings. Also, the entire team will be disbanded,” she said.
According to her, the officers are being held for further inquiries and will face appropriate disciplinary action over their alleged misconduct.
She added that the command would not tolerate misconduct or impunity among its personnel, regardless of rank or assignment.
Adebisi said Tijani had, upon assuming office, charged officers to discharge their duties with integrity and humility.
“Here in the Lagos State Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, we say no to impunity.
“When we find officers going against that directive, we take action against them,” she said.
The spokesperson urged residents to report officers whose conduct contravened established rules and police directives.
She also commended residents and members of the community for helping to identify the officers captured in the video.
The image maker said their cooperation enabled the command to identify and apprehend the officers within a short period.
She urged residents to continue providing credible information to help the police address misconduct and improve security across the state. (NAN)
