The new Premier League campaign offers Nigerian football fans plenty to look forward to, with established Super Eagles stars joined by players beginning new chapters in England’s top flight.
From Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey at Fulham to Frank Onyeka’s return with newly promoted Coventry City, the Nigerian contingent has a mix of experience and fresh faces.
1. Alex Iwobi – Fulham
Iwobi remains one of Nigeria’s most experienced players in the Premier League. The Fulham midfielder has established himself as an important part of Marco Silva’s side and will be looking to build on another productive campaign.
2. Calvin Bassey – Fulham
Bassey has become a regular presence in Fulham’s defence since arriving from Ajax. Strong, athletic and versatile, the Super Eagles defender will be expected to play an important role at Craven Cottage this season.
3. Ola Aina – Nottingham Forest
Aina enters another Premier League campaign with Nottingham Forest after establishing himself as one of the club’s dependable defenders. His ability to operate on either side of the defence makes him a valuable option for Forest.
4. Taiwo Awoniyi – Nottingham Forest
Awoniyi will be hoping for a more consistent campaign after injuries disrupted his recent seasons. When fit, the striker has shown that he can be a major threat in front of goal, and Forest will be counting on him to deliver.
5. Frank Onyeka – Coventry City
Onyeka returns to the Premier League with Coventry following the club’s promotion to the top flight. He brings previous experience from his time with Brentford and will be tasked with helping Coventry compete at the highest level.
6. Semi Ajayi – Hull City
Ajayi is another familiar face returning to the Premier League. The experienced centre-back was part of Hull’s promotion-winning campaign and will provide valuable top-flight experience as the club begins life back in the division.
7. David Akintola – Hull City
For Akintola, the new season represents an opportunity to make his Premier League debut. The winger was part of the Hull side that secured promotion and will now get the chance to test himself against England’s top-flight opposition.
8. Zadok Yohanna – Brighton
One of the most exciting names on the list, Yohanna has made a remarkable rise from Nigerian academy football to the Premier League. Brighton signed the teenage winger from AIK on a five-year deal, with the club highlighting his pace, creativity and ability to take on defenders.
9. Benjamin Fredrick – Brentford
Fredrick has earned his promotion to Brentford’s first-team squad after impressing at youth level. The 21-year-old Nigerian defender signed a new four-year contract and will now look to establish himself in the Premier League. (Vanguard)
