Abia State Gov Alex Otti and his Anambra counterpart, Charles Soludo
Abia and Anambra States are yet to resolve the over 70-year-old boundary dispute in over six communities in both states, despite the intervention of the Director General of the National boundary commission, NBC, in the country, Surv. Adamu Adaji’s presence in Anambra.
The traditional ruler of Enugwu Umuonyia in Orumba South local government area of the state, Igwe P N Ezeamama among other traditional rulers, pleaded with the commission to allow the monarchs in those communities in the states to intervene further before its final decision.
The request was granted by the DG of the NBC, Abaji, who appealed to both states to maintain the usual peace until the final verdict on the issue, but stated that the earlier Supreme Court judgment on the matter must be adhered to.
Earlier, both the deputy governors of the two states, Engr Ikechukwu Emetu (Abia) and Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim (Anambra) in their separate addresses, assured that whatever issues Arising from the lands must be resolved amicably among the sister states.
Both leaders maintained that the matter would be resolved through dialogue and adherence to established legal procedures.
The leaders agreed that boundary issues affect the lives, identity, and livelihoods of the people and therefore require sincerity, fairness, and professionalism to achieve a lasting solution.
In his speech, the Director-General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), Surv. Adamu A. Adaji, commended both governments for sustaining peaceful engagement over the years.
He disclosed that out of the 23-kilometre common boundary shared by both states, about 15 kilometres had already been jointly traced and provisionally demarcated, while efforts were ongoing to resolve the remaining eight-kilometre stretch.
According to him, “the Commission remains committed to providing the technical and institutional support required to conclude the exercise in line with historical records, legal instruments, and established procedures,” Adaji said.
