The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Thursday clarified why Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) had operational issues at the Lekki Transmission Substation.

In a rejoinder, management explained that the incident involved the simultaneous tripping of EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders at 04:34 am on 26th August, 2026, due to overcurrent and an earth fault.

Responding to EKEDP’s claim, the rejoinder said, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) wishes to correct the misinformation circulated by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) on 26/8/26 regarding operations at the Lekki Transmission Substation.

“Contrary to EKEDP’s claim that TCN’s T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection, the actual incident involved the simultaneous tripping of EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders at 04:34 am on 26th August, 2026, due to overcurrent and earth fault.”

According to the rejoinder, the fault resulted in the inter-tripping of TCN’s TR1-60MVA 132/33kV transformer primary and secondary breakers, accompanied by a loud bang and smoke.

The rejoinder added that “TCN Maintenance Crew promptly responded, rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker, and restored both primary and secondary breakers later that same day. However, upon EKEDP’s trial closure of its Oniru feeder, the same relay indications caused another trip, necessitating further corrective work.

– No outage occurred on TCN’s T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDP.

“The incident was strictly related to EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders.

“TCN’s technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time.

“TCN assures electricity customers impacted by the incident that we are actively addressing the fault caused by the DisCo’s feeders and regrets any inconvenience caused.
