The Bill which seeks to establish a Poverty Eradication Commission as a statutory body to coordinate and monitor all poverty activities in Nigeria has passed third and final reading at the Senate.
The bill passed final reading after the clause and clause considerations stage. While leading debate on the recommendations of the bill, the Chairman of Senate Committees on National Planning and Economic and Poverty Eradication, Senator Musa Kwankwaso representing Kano Central, admitted that the intention of the bill is for the Commission to act as government agency for catalysing resources at all times for the purpose of eradicating poverty for mass participation in the economic development process.
He added that the Commission would also be made of five directorates and would be headed by a Director-General, under the supervision of a Chairman and six other members from each of the six geo-political zones.
Virtually all the senators who contributed spoke in support of the bill to be read the third time.
In his brief remark, the President of the Senate Bukola Saraki, said the bill was a welcome development as regards poverty eradication in the country.
