Anambra PPRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga
By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
Crisis is brewing in Nkpor community, Idemili North Local Government area of Anambra State, following the death of an 80-year-old aspirant, Paul Onwualu.
Information has it that the octogenarian died as a result of injuries sustained after alleged beatings when policemen said to have come from the Force Intelligence Department (FCID) Abuja, in company of some opponents stormed his Umusiome Nkpor residence to arrest him.
A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said: "It was in the process of arresting him that he was beaten badly, bundled into a waiting police vehicle and whisked away to Ogidi police station.
"Midway to the police station he passed out and was rushed to the Iyi-Enu Mission hospital Ogidi, where medical personnel on duty confirmed him dead."
Lamenting the demise of her husband in tears, the wife of the deceased, Anthonia Onwualu, said: "Last week Thursday, the police in company of some people who opposed my husband's Igweship aspiration, stormed our residence and beat my husband to coma before whisking him away to an unknown destination
"I was later told that the policemen were on their way to Ogidi Police Station to detain him but he died midway to the station. Those oppositions that came with the police to our residence scaled the perimeter fence of our compound because the gate is always under lock and key."
However, it was learnt that the ongoing Igweship tussle is already pending before a High Court in Suit No. HID/72/2026 at Ogidi.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached for his reaction on the matter.
