A wheelbarrow pusher, identified as Ifeanyichukwu Udo, was killed in the early hours of Friday after a speeding commercial bus rammed into him while he was standing at the Ikwerre Road/Ekwe Street junction in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Another pedestrian was also struck by the vehicle and sustained serious injuries.
Residents told Daily Trust that the accident occurred along Ikwerre Road in the Mile 3 area of Diobu, a few minutes before 6:00 a.m.
They said Udo, believed to be in his early 40s, was standing by the roadside waiting for customers when the Mitsubishi commercial bus veered off and hit him.
The injured victim was rushed, alongside Udo, to a nearby clinic by traffic officials and operatives of the Nkpolu Police Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Ogbuefi Henry King.
Udo, however, later died while receiving treatment.
The driver of the commercial bus, identified simply as Saturday, was arrested at the scene, while the vehicle was impounded and taken to the police station for further investigation.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Command, ASP Blessing Kaborlo Agabe, confirmed the incident, saying one person died in the crash.
“I can confirm the accident which claimed one life along the Mile 3/Ikwerre Road axis of Diobu, Port Harcourt. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested, while investigation into the incident is ongoing,” she said. (Daily Trust)
