Mr Peter Obi
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has explained that worsening national conditions and the need to “rescue Nigeria” informed his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement, Obi said he formally joined the NDC alongside Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, stressing that the move was driven by a shared commitment to build a country anchored on justice, accountability, competence, and compassion.
“This decision was not made out of anger, personal ambition, or convenience. It came after deep reflection on the present condition of our nation and the urgent need to rescue Nigeria from the dangerous path it is currently heading,” Obi said
He maintained that politics should be people-centered, noting that many Nigerians are struggling with rising costs of living, failing businesses, and declining hope for the future.
Obi also cited persistent internal crises and legal disputes within parties as a key reason for his exit from the ADC, similar to his earlie’ departure from the Labour Party.
According to him, such challenges were deliberately orchestrated to limit effective participation by him and other stakeholders in the electoral process.
Despite his exit, he expressed gratitude to the ADC leadership, particularly its chairman, David Mark, and acknowledged the role of Atiku Abubakar and other party leaders.
Obi warned against what he described as the use of litigation and internal crises to weaken opposition parties, urging the government to promote a healthier democratic environment.
“Democracy must never become a weapon against the people,” he said, emphasising the need for strong institutions and credible political alternatives.
Highlighting Nigeria’s current challenges—ranging from poverty and hunger to insecurity and economic decline—Obi said leadership must be rooted in capacity, character, and compassion rather than “propaganda or division.”
He described his move to the NDC as a continuation of his long-standing mission to promote responsible governance, institutional independence, and inclusive development.
Obi also called on Nigerians, particularly youths and women, to remain hopeful and engaged, stressing that national transformation depends on collective belief and sustained effort.
“The task before us is bigger than any individual or political party. It is about the future of our children and the survival of our dear nation,” he said. (Nigerian Tribune)
