National Coordinator of the Obedient movement, Dr Yunusa Tanko
The Obedient Movement has expressed concern over the lingering crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that the development could undermine opposition participation in the 2027 general elections.
National Coordinator of the movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, spoke at a one-day conference organised in Kano by the Obi for Nigeria Movement in collaboration with the Obedient Movement.
Tanko said ongoing litigations within the ADC, including dispute over party leadership and court rulings, posed serious risks to the party’s stability.
“I am very concerned about the litigation processes embedded within the ADC. The timelines involved, especially with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s deadlines, make the situation worrisome,” he said.
He explained that with multiple legal battles potentially moving from the Federal High Court to the Appeal Court and possibly the Supreme Court within a short timeframe, the party might struggle to meet critical electoral deadlines.
Tanko called on the judiciary and security agencies to act in the interest of democracy, stressing that a strong opposition was essential for good governance.
“Good democracy brings good governance, and good governance produces good leadership. We must protect the democratic process,” he added.
While failing to confirm or deny reports of Obi’s defect to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Tanko said he would support any decision taken by the former Labour Party presidential candidate.
“We have always said that wherever Peter Obi goes, that is where we are going. We believe in his leadership and capacity to deliver,” he said.
The conference also witnessed the formal integration of new support groups into the Obedient Movement, including a Kano-based group said to have mobilised grassroots support across northern states.
Tanko noted that the development demonstrated the growing acceptance of Obi’s candidacy beyond southern Nigeria.
“People used to say we don’t have supporters in the North, but today that has been proven wrong. We have strong support across the country,” he said.
He also spoke on the emergence of the “OK Movement,” which is advocating a possible alliance between Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to him, the idea is driven by the need for a younger generation of leaders capable of addressing Nigeria’s challenges in areas such as education, security, and economic development.
“The majority of our youth are supporting the idea of an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket. It is seen as a combination that can move Nigeria forward,” he said.
He, however, emphasised that any final decision on political alliances rests with the key actors involved. (Weekend Trust)
