Mr Peter Obi
By BONIFACE AKARAH
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential frontrunner, Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to end what he described as the persecution of political opponents disguised as criminal prosecution, warning that such actions threaten the rule of law and national stability.
In a statement, the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate said the integrity of the rule of law in Nigeria must remain non-negotiable, stressing that any erosion of the justice system could undermine the country’s economic development and democratic institutions.
Obi expressed concern over the arrest and continued detention of two leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation, and Nasir El Rufai, former Governor of Kaduna State.
“The current administration must put an end to the blatant persecution of political opponents disguised as criminal prosecution,” Obi said.
He questioned the timing of the arrests, noting that they coincided with the individuals’ commitment to ensure the current administration is voted out in the 2027 elections.
“The timing of their arrests raises serious questions. Prosecutorial decisions must be grounded in concrete evidence and probable cause, transparently presented without ulterior motives,” he said.
According to the former Anambra State Governor, the denial of bail or the imposition of excessively stringent bail conditions suggests the use of criminal prosecution as a political tool.
“The undue denial of bail or unjustly stringent conditions imposed on bail leave little doubt that the government is wielding criminal prosecution as a weapon against its political opponents,” he said.
Obi also raised concerns about the handling of El-Rufai’s case, alleging that the former governor had been moved between multiple anti-graft and security agencies.
“The situation surrounding Malam El-Rufai is particularly concerning; his repeated transfers between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, and the Department of State Services suggest a desperate search for any charge that might stick,” he said.
The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate said Nigeria requires a civil and criminal justice system that inspires confidence among citizens, stressing that no one should fear persecution for their political beliefs.
“I firmly believe that Nigeria requires a civil and criminal justice system that instills confidence in every citizen—that no one should fear persecution for their political beliefs or actions disapproved by those in power,” Obi stated.
While reiterating his support for the fight against corruption, Obi warned that such efforts must not be selective.
“I wholeheartedly support the fight against corruption and wrongdoing, but it must be conducted with integrity and transparency, starting with those currently in power rather than targeting opponents,” he said.
“A credible anti-corruption campaign cannot afford to be selective.”
He added: “A new Nigeria is possible.”
