Akwa Ibom State Gov, Eno
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has urged Governor Umo Eno to desist from “playing politics” with the Ibom Deep Seaport, a long-delayed state project that has consumed substantial funds under successive administrations.
The call came from PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice (PAPA-J) following Eno’s recent public appeal to President Bola Tinubu to fulfill what he described as a promise to deliver the seaport.
In a statement signed by Dr. Tom FredFish, Chairman, and Savour Uko, Secretary of PAPA-J, the party described the governor’s remarks during a visit by the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, as unnecessary and misleading.
The PDP noted that the Federal Government had already granted approval for the project during the administration of former Governor Udom Emmanuel, including the license for Akwa Ibom State to develop and operate the deep seaport.
“It is unclear what further action Governor Eno expects from President Tinubu when federal approval has already been granted,” the party said.
The statement highlighted that the state government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Interaf Group Consortium to advance the seaport and the adjoining Ibom Industrial City, with the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, signing on behalf of Governor Eno.
The PDP argued that if a consortium has already been engaged, the governor should take practical steps to attract investors and drive the project forward rather than making repeated public appeals.
“Governance requires initiative, planning, and execution—not political statements that suggest the Federal Government is responsible for a project that lies within the operational remit of the state,” the party said.
PAPA-J also reminded Governor Eno of his 2023 campaign statements expressing skepticism about federal involvement in the seaport, questioning the apparent shift in position.
The PDP concluded: “Governor Eno must stop playing politics with the Ibom Deep Seaport and focus on delivering the project. The people of Akwa Ibom are tired of speeches—they want tangible progress.” (Vanguard)
