Renowned musician and Shuga Band founder Akiin Shuga passes away in New Brunswick, Canada, after a celebrated three-decade career.

Renowned Nigerian musician and live-band leader, Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, has died.

The celebrated performer and founder of Shuga Band passed away on October 30th, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada. He was 50 years old.

Akiin Shuga was widely regarded as Nigeria’s Live-Band Grandmaster, known for transforming event entertainment and mentoring a generation of musicians.

His family announced his passing in a statement describing him as “a revered music icon and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”

Born in Ondo State, Akiin Shuga overcame polio at age five, rising to national prominence as one of the country’s most consistent and professional bandleaders.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across Nigeria’s creative community, celebrating his life, resilience, and contribution to live music.

His family says details of funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
