Battle for APC not yet over as rival APC plans street protests over INEC’s recognition of mega party

Those who think that the battle for the acronym “APC” has been won and lost following Wednesday’s registration of the mega opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC), by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are mistaken, News Express has learnt.

Contrary to popular belief, the African Peoples Congress which first applied for registration as APC has yet to surrender. Apart from vowing to continue its court case over the issue, the party is also planning to launch street protests in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, to express displeasure over what it considers to be daylight robbery.

The protests, however, appear to have been nipped in the bud after the plans leaked to the police, leading to Inspector General of Police, Mohammed D. Abubakar, promptly imposing an indefinite ban on all manner of street processions in Abuja.

News Express got to learn of the ban through an event organiser who was prevented from proceeding with an already approved procession yesterday. He said: “I was told by the Commissioner of Police, FCT that every public procession in Abuja has been suspended by Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, the IG of Police, because there were reports that an aggrieved party, the African Peoples Congress, was planning to take to the streets to register their anger against INEC registration of All Progressive Congress, APC.”

Efforts by News Express to reach the police headquarters were unsuccessful as police spokesman Frank Mba did not pick his calls.
