A Nigerian Senate Committee probing alleged misappropriation and embezzlement of funds by some of the country’s ambassadors reconvenes tomorrow to listen to the star witness in the disappearance of the $27 million realised from the sale of Nigeria’s property in the USA.

Emeka Ugwuonye, a US-based Nigerian lawyer who handled the sale of the property, had been scheduled to testify before the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs on July 2 but requested a fresh date to enable him arrange for necessary documents.

In a July 4 reply to Ugwuonye’s July 2 letter, the Committee Chairman, Senator (Amb) Matthew Ifeanyi Nwagwu, wrote: “I cordially invite you to a meeting with the Committee slated for Thursday, 18^th July, 2013 in Senate Hearing Room 204 (2^nd Floor) New Senate Building, by 10:00 a.m.

“Kindly arrange to submit to my office all relevant documents, information or details pertaining to the sale of the properties and operation of the Property Account on or before the meeting date.”

Contacted yesterday by News Express, Ugwuonye said he was ready for the senate hearing. “I have details of what transpired and it would be my pleasure to assist my country in whatever way I can to recover any monies misappropriated or embezzled by unpatriotic elements masquerading as nationalists,” he said.

News Express reports that the senate inquest was occasioned by a petition submitted by the Transform Nigeria Citizen Initiative, an NGO committed to cleaning up the rot in the Nigerian system.
