UNILORIN VC wants life jail for looters •Advises Buhari on choice of education minister

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has joined the raging debate on the appropriate punishment for looting, casting his vote for loot recovery coupled with life imprisonment.

Addressing journalists in the Council Chambers of the University, Prof. Ambali opposed capital punishment for corruption, saying: “Capital punishment for corrupt officers is something we have to look at and look at the experiences of countries that have executed that and its aftermath. But if you don’t collect the loots before killing him/she, you just transfered the loots to other group of people. If you collect the loot and kill then that’s a double jeopardy.”

The UNILORIN Vice-Chancellor advised President Muhammadu Buhari on the type of person to appoint as Minister of Education in his cabinet expected to be unveiled within days.

He said he prefers someone who has “the interest of education at heart – not necessarily an educationist or a university lecturer” to be handed the job.

The media briefing, which is on-going, is part of activities lined up for the 40th Anniversary and 31st Convocation of UNILORIN.
