Traders in Anambra State have taken to the streets to register their displeasure over alleged moves to transfer Boko Haram convicts and suspects to prisons in the state and elsewhere in the South-East.
Already, the protesters have blocked Uga Junction, the major road connecting the state capital Awka with the famed commercial town of Onitsha, chanting war songs and brandishing placards expressing outright rejection of the alleged impending transfer of convicted and accused Boko Haram terrorists to the South-East.
News Express had late this morning reported that markets across Anamvra State have been shut over security reports indicating that Boko Haram elements may attack the markets. After the Sanitation Day traditionally held across the state from 7 – 10am every last Saturday of the month, had traders went to the markets to open for business, only to be barred from gaining entry, with the gates securely locked.
“Market leaders have informed us that the markets will remain cshut until Monday so as to monitor the situation,” one trader told News Express.
Boko Haram activities have been restricted to the Muslim-dominated North of Nigeria but with no guarantee that the Islamists will not attempt to export their terrorist acts to the largely Christian South.
