Late Kolade Johnson
A civil rights activist and Executive Chairman, Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ), Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, has declared his total support to the proposed mass rally by a group of Nigerians to protest the extra-judicial killings by the Police in Lagos State and its environs, particularly over the recent illegal killing of Kolade Johnson in the Onipetesi area of Lagos last Sunday.
He however disagreed with the authorities of the Nigeria Police for parading only two policemen out of the seven attached to the Anti-Cultism Squad that committed the offence, insisting that the seven Police officers involved in the killing of Kolade Johnson should be apprehended and meant to face the music for the dastardly act.
He then urged the Police authorities to fish out the five remaining officers that were involved in the killing of the deceased and also called for the enforcement of death penalty or life imprisonment for any culprit of the dastard act as stipulated in the Force Order No. 237, that it was illegal and unlawful for any security agent to involve in the extra-judicial killing of fellow citizens they are employed to protect.
According to a press statement he issued copies were made available to newsmen on Thursday, Comrade Sulaiman called on well-meaning citizens of the country to rise up free Nigerians from the terror and menace of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Nigeria Police as a whole by joining the mass protest against the extra-judicial killings by law enforcement agents of state.
He described the dastard act of the men of Nigeria Police “as illegal, unconstitutional, unlawful, evil, ungodly, anathema, anti-people and crime against God and humanity”, supporting his argument with the case of Igbo v State and Alia Agu v. State &R. V. Okon in the criminal Code Cap “cap38” of the Federation Law.
Commenting further on the development, he urged Nigerians not to allow the killing of Kolade Johnson and other hapless Nigerians to be swept under the carpet as the Police used to do while advising the Nigerian government to organise psychiatric tests for any of the men that want of join the Police Force since their duty would handle gun in line of their duty. This, he said, will go a long way to curb the incessant killing of innocent Nigerians by the trigger-happy rank and file police officers.
Sulaiman who doubles as the Convener, Save Lagos Group (SLG), stressed that the security agents in the country should be ready to work in respect of Section 33, 34 and 36 of the amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He therefore called on President Muhammadu Buhari and his government to stop paying lip-service to the ongoing illegal and unlawful killings of innocent citizens in various parts of the country.
He also reiterated his advocacy for total disbandment of SARS by declaring it as illegal.
