Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly ballot in Anambra State was generally peaceful but tainted with pockets of car key seizure. Apart from few journalists whose monitoring was delayed earlier in the day following the seizure of their car keys by policemen, the Reverend Father in charge of St Andrews Anglican Church Nawgu also had his car key confiscated after casting his vote.
According to him, a retinue of stern-looking policemen numbering about 50 stopped him while he was leaving his polling booth at about 10:30 a.m. and demanded for his car key.
His words: “I was just driving home from my polling station when I was stopped by about 50 stern-looking police officers.
“They asked to pack and hand over the key to my car, I handed it over to them and they drove off towards Aguata area.
“This happened since about 10:30 in the morning and till now (4:00 p.m., I have not seen them.”
The cleric lamented that he would have gotten home to eat and relax before preparing for today’s church service.
Also, two election observers, Uchendu Joseph and Hycenth Uluoka, said the key to the car they were using was also seized.
Like the Anglican Rev Fr., they were also asked to pack their car by police and hand over the key.
They said they were only able to get the number of the vehicle the police officers drove in.
