There was a noticeable sense of unease and anxiety at the main campus of the University of Jos on Monday following the discovery of a beheaded man on the university’s farmland.
The discovery of the deceased’s lifeless body without its head caused panic and prompted some university employees to rush to the scene in an attempt to identify the victim.
A senior staff member of the university, who requested anonymity, stated that, based on preliminary investigations, the deceased was neither a staff member nor a student, and the body was most likely that of one of the farmers working on the university’s farmland.
The official said, “The victim is neither a student nor a staff member of the university. He is known to people around the area because he usually comes there to farm. We believe he came very early this morning, as he normally does.
“What actually happened is still unclear, but from the nature of the attack, it appears those responsible came specifically to kill him and made away with his head.”
He said the university management was already aware of the incident and would issue an official statement to members of the university community and the media.
“The Information Directorate is handling the situation and will communicate appropriately through the university’s official platforms,” the source added.
Efforts to reach the university’s Deputy Registrar in charge of Information, Emmanuel Madugu, proved abortive. The Plateau State Police Command is also yet to confirm the development. (Nigerian Tribune)
