Twist in race for new IGP: Zuokumor, Doma are last-minute favourites •Jonathan in dilemma over Abba

Facts have emerged on why President Goodluck Jonathan did not name the new Inspector General of Police after yesterday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) as expected.

The Nigerian leader, according to sources, found himself in a dilemma over AIG Suleiman Abba, AIG for Zone 7 Abuja, following spirited lobby against Abba by those opposed to the choice. News Express had on Tuesday exclusively reported that Abba had been recommended as the new IGP by the out-going IGP Mohammed Abubakar and might be so announced after yesterday’s FEC meeting.

“Jonathan seems to be changing his mind about Abba following convincing evidence put before him that his appointment would perpetuate the lopsided appointments in the Force in favour of a particular region and religion,” an informed source told News Express late last night.

The source said that President Jonathan was now considering giving the job to either DIG Mike Zuokumor, DIG Operations, or Force Secretary, AIG Dan Azumi Doma, and would make his choice public today.

A late entrant into the race, AIG Doma’s candidacy is reportedly being pushed by former military ruler, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.), who like him, comes from Niger State.

“Those promoting Abba’s cause are, however, not giving up. Only yesterday, Mohammed Abacha was at Aso Rock Presidential Villa to lobby for Abba, who was once the ADC to his mother, former First Lady Maryam Abacha,” a source told News Express.

The position of IGP of Africa’s most populous becomes vacant following the exit of Abubakar, who completed the maximum allowed 35 years of service yesterday.
