The much-anticipated 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season is finally here, with excitement already building among football fans across the country. Although the league has been dogged in recent years by controversial officiating, backlogs of unpaid salaries, allowances and other administrative challenges that have affected its popularity, the show must go on. With defending champions Rangers International seeking to retain their crown and ambitious sides such as Rivers United, Shooting Stars and Ikorodu City hoping to challenge for honours, the new campaign promises plenty of drama. In this analysis culled from The Guardian, David Meshioye previews the 20 NPFL clubs and assesses how they could fare this season.

1. Shooting Stars

Manager: Salisu Yusuf

Style: High press, aggressive

The Oluyole Warriors finally returned to continental football after decades in the doldrums, finishing third last season with 60 points from 38 matches.

However, Shooting Stars enter the new campaign under a new and experienced manager after the club’s hierarchy appointed Salisu Yusuf following the departure of Nurudeen Aweroro just two weeks before the start of the season.

Known for his high-pressing and aggressive approach, Yusuf inherits a squad that still looks like a work in progress following the departures of key players, including Ismail Ayodele, Tijani Kabiru and 2026 top assist provider Ayobami Junior.

New arrivals Taheer Abubakar, Kalu Nweke, Albert Kovarh, Tamuno Kalio, Issa Yusuf and Aule Johnma will be expected to fill the void as Shooting Stars prepare for the additional demands of domestic and continental football.

Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) began their 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign on an encouraging note, defeating newly promoted Inter Lagos FC 2-1 at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, on Friday.

2. Inter Lagos

Home turf: Onikan Stadium

Manager: Shakiru Giwa

Style: Possession-based, technical

There is a widespread belief that Inter Lagos could struggle to make an impact in their first season in the top flight.

As one of the league’s newcomers, the Lagos-based club faces a daunting task against more established NPFL sides. Their failure to secure a positive result against Shooting Stars at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan could have a slight dent on the team’s morale.

Inter Lagos played out a goalless draw against Shooting Stars in a pre-season friendly, raising hopes among their supporters that the club could upset expectations. But the Lagos-based side began their campaign on a losing note following their 2 -1 loss to Shooting Stars of Ibadan at the Lekan Salami Sporting Complex, Adamasingba, on Friday

Recruitment, however, remains a major question. The club has largely retained the players who helped secure promotion to the elite division, meaning much will depend on how quickly they adapt to the demands of NPFL football.

3. Rangers International

Manager: Fidelis Ilechukwu

Home turf: MKO Sports Arena, Abeokuta

Style: Dynamic, high transition

Defending champions Rangers International will hope to begin the season where they left off last season, having retained much of the squad that delivered the league title.

The Flying Antelopes have prepared extensively, including a series of international friendly matches, and expectations are high for coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, who has won two league titles in three seasons.

The arrival of Azeez Falolu, Ifeanyi Okechukwu, Folarin Temitope, Abuchi Okeke and Chimezie Sunday has further strengthened an already deep squad.

That depth could prove crucial as Rangers juggle domestic commitments with their CAF Champions League campaign.

The club has also become increasingly familiar with the MKO Sports Arena in Abeokuta, their adopted home while the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu undergoes renovation.

The major challenge will be managing the squad’s workload during what promises to be a demanding season.

4. Katsina United

Manager: Azeez Audu Mohammed

Home turf: Muhammadu Dikko Stadium

Style: Dominant, focused

Katsina United will look to punch above their weight, relying heavily on home support to secure another respectable campaign.

Coach Azeez Audu Mohammed will be counting on new signings Luis Dadong, Ubong Essien, Joshua Akpan, Samson Obi, Francis Koroma and Michael Ibe Okoro to hit the ground running, beginning with a difficult opening fixture against defending champions Rangers International.

The club finished ninth last season with 52 points and will be determined to avoid the inconsistency that undermined their campaign.

5. Kano Pillars

Manager: Daniel ‘Ijaball’ Ogunmodede

Home turf: Sani Abacha Stadium

Style: Attacking, wing play

Backed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and a passionate fan base, Kano Pillars are expected to improve significantly after an underwhelming 15th-place finish last season with 48 points.

Coach Daniel ‘Ijaball’ Ogunmodede is regarded as one of the tactically gifted coaches in the league and will be expected to revive a side that has struggled to replace the talents of its previous golden generation.

The Sai Masu Gida traditionally rely heavily on wing play, although Ogunmodede could introduce tactical variations as the season progresses.

With strong support from the stands and renewed expectations around the club, Pillars could surprise a few teams.

6. Kwara United

Home turf: Kwara State Stadium

Manager: Suleiman Ashifat

Style: Tactical versatility

Kwara United were among the busiest clubs in the transfer market, bringing in Obed Ponkab, Benjamin Jack, Ouattara Khalifa, Anthony Nnamdi, Ada Adam Umar and Alex Jerry.

The Harmony Boys claimed their first major national trophy in June 2025 when they defeated FC Abakaliki on penalties in the President Federation Cup.

That victory secured continental football and represented a historic milestone for both the club and football in Kwara State.

Their ability to balance domestic commitments with continental competition will be crucial this season.

7. Rivers United

Manager: Finidi George

Turf: Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium

Style: Experienced, attacking

Rivers United will be among the leading contenders for the title after finishing runners-up last season, just one point behind champions Rangers.

The Port Harcourt side retained the core of the squad and backroom staff that delivered a 67-point campaign, giving coach Finidi George a solid foundation from which to launch another title challenge.

New arrivals Chikamso Amaefula, James Ekebuike, Alex Oyowah, Ubong Williams, Imo Obot, Ekene Awazie, Blessed Iyamu, Clinton Andy and Shehu Abdulrasheed Dabai have added further depth.

With experience, talent and squad depth on their side, Rivers United could be one of the biggest obstacles to Rangers’ title defence and coach Finidi George is determined to correct the wrong this time around.

8. Bendel Insurance

Manager: Kennedy Boboye

Home turf: Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium

Style: Defensive block, counter-attacking

The healthy mixture of veteran experience and young talent has served Bendel Insurance well, and coach Kennedy Boboye will be hoping his players can maintain their intensity.

The Edo side have continued to punch below their potential in recent seasons, but their defensive organisation and ability to counter quickly could make them difficult opponents.

Boboye’s biggest test may come in the Old Bendel Derby against Warri Wolves, where rivalry and local pride will add another layer to an already intriguing contest.

9. Warri Wolves

Manager: Hassan Abdallah

Home turf: Ozoro Stadium

Style: Transition-based

Warri Wolves are still searching for the magic that made them one of the most feared sides in Nigerian football during the early 2000s.

Despite producing notable players such as Sunday Mba and Azubuike Egwuekwe, the club has struggled to translate its history into sustained success.

Coach Hassan Abdallah will need to strike the right balance between youth and experience if Warri Wolves are to avoid another season of merely making up the numbers.

How quickly he can mould the squad into a competitive unit could determine how long he remains in the dugout.

10. Doma United

Manager: Deji Ayeni

Home turf: Pantami Stadium

Style: Structured, defensive

Doma United return to the top flight hoping to make a stronger impression this time around.

A positive result against Sporting Lagos at the Pantami Stadium would provide an ideal platform for the Savannah Tigers to announce their return.

The club has placed its faith in coach Deji Ayeni, whose technical experience is expected to strengthen the team’s approach.

Their structured and defensive style will face a major test against the league’s stronger attacking sides.

11. Ikorodu City

Manager: Ali Kandil

Home turf: Mobolaji Johnson Arena

Style: Possession-based

Ikorodu City

Ikorodu City FC were one of the shining lights of the 2025/26 NPFL season, finishing fourth with 58 points.

The Oga Boys narrowly missed out on continental football after losing 1-0 to El-Kanemi Warriors, who claimed the final CAF Confederation Cup ticket.

The disappointment has, however, been put behind them.

Coach Ali Kandil is expected to retain his possession-based philosophy after the club strengthened its squad.

Linus Christopher joined from Sunshine Stars on a three-year deal, while Adam Abdulraman arrived from Abuja-based Mahanaim FC. Ikechukwu Junior was promoted to the senior side, while Abdulraman Adam also earned promotion from the youth setup.

Abayomi Ayodeji extended his contract, giving the club further stability.

Consistency remains Ikorodu City’s greatest asset, having finished fourth in successive seasons.

12. Ranchers Bees

Manager: Usman Abdallah

Home turf: Ahmadu Bello Stadium

Style: High-energy, pressing

Ranchers Bees are among the newcomers hoping to make a mark after returning to top-flight football for the first time in 18 years.

The Kaduna-based club received a major boost after Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar “Jololo” acquired the club and subsequently appointed experienced coach Usman Abdallah on a two-year contract.

The club has also been active in the transfer market.

Key additions include Nigeria U-20 winger Jamilu Yusuf, experienced central defender and former Kwara United captain Kabiru Magus, left-back Faisal Sani, midfielder Tijani Kabiru from Shooting Stars, experienced defender Ayinla Olanrewaju Abdulrahman and versatile defender Kabiru Mohammed.

The challenge now is turning the investment into results.

13. Abia Warriors

Manager: Imama Amapakabo

Home turf: Umuahia Township Stadium

Style: Fluid, player-centric

Abia Warriors finished seventh last season, a respectable achievement considering the financial and administrative challenges that confronted the club.

The Umuahia side will be eager to build on that performance after coach Imama Amapakabo was reinstated ahead of the new campaign following the completion of a brief suspension.

The club has strengthened its attack with Ikechi Chuku Godspower, a winger from Sokoto United, and Ibrahim Abdullahi, popularly known as Ibrahim Carrick, a Nigeria U-20 winger who joined from Ikorodu City.

Abia Warriors will hope the new additions provide the creativity and pace needed to push them higher up the table.

14. Kun Khalifat FC

Manager: Obinna Uzoho

Home turf: Dan Anyiam Stadium

Style: Counter-attacking

Kun Khalifat FC survived relegation by the skin of their teeth last season and will be determined to put that experience behind them.

The club has added seven players, including Friday Roland, Opara Favour and Nonso Samuel from a state academy.

Romanus Chinonso and Ogu Jerry arrived from Solution FC and Abia Warriors respectively, while Olubode Hassan joined from First Bank FC.

Uche Moses also left Abia Warriors to join coach Obinna Uzoho.

Kun Khalifat will need more consistency if they are to avoid another battle against relegation.

15. Enyimba

Manager: Emmanuel Deutsch

Home turf: Enyimba International Stadium

Style: Possession, control

Cameroonian tactician Emmanuel Deutsch was appointed in January 2026 after a turbulent campaign that saw Enyimba struggle for consistency under several head coaches.

The nine-time champions appeared to be heading towards serious trouble before Deutsch helped steady the ship and steer the club away from the relegation zone.

However, Enyimba’s relatively quiet transfer window and delayed preparations have raised concerns among supporters.

Unlike previous rebuilding periods, when the club announced several high-profile acquisitions, there have been limited major arrivals ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Former captain Kalu Nweke has also departed, joining Shooting Stars on a free transfer.

The Aba giants now face the difficult task of rebuilding their identity and restoring the winning mentality that has defined the club for decades.

16. Barau FC

Manager: Eugene Agagbe

Home turf: Sani Abacha Stadium

Style: Disciplined, vertical

Barau FC have made significant moves ahead of the new season, bringing in 14 players as they look to improve on last season’s eighth-place finish.

Notable arrivals include midfielders Anthony Omaka from Rivers United and Ahmadu Liman from Niger Tornadoes, forward Casmir Azubuike from Abia Warriors and goalkeeper Adamu Abubakar from Gombe United.

Returning overseas-based players Alameen Umar from Egypt and Christian Maduka from Albania have also joined the squad.

Other recruits include Idris Saidu, Adekunle Oluwasegun, Boluwatife Ajina, Elvis Obukowho, Suur Kumanga, Nasiru Jibrin and Daddy Abdulrahman.

Coach Eugene Agagbe retained his position after guiding the team to eighth place and the quarter-finals of the 2026 President Federation Cup.

A home clash against Nasarawa United will provide an early test of their ambitions.

17. Nasarawa United

Manager: Ayuba Mbwas Mangut

Home turf: Lafia Township Stadium

Style: Physical, direct

Nasarawa United have undergone significant squad changes ahead of the new campaign.

Defender Ahmed Family joined on a two-year deal from Niger Tornadoes, replacing Adekunle Samuel.

Several players have also departed, including Izuchukwu Chimezie, who joined Rangers International; Emmanuel Utaka, who moved to Rivers United; Abubakar Garba, who joined Ahli Wad Madani in Sudan; and Hussaini Mubarak, who moved to BSK Bijelo Brdo.

Segun Adekunle joined Barau FC, Benjamin Jack moved to Kwara United and Anthony Nwadioha joined Bendel Insurance.

Coach Ayuba Mbwas Mangut, appointed in August, will be expected to bring stability to the club.

His previous work at Plateau United, where he helped guide the side to fifth place with 58 points, provides hope that he can improve Nasarawa United’s fortunes.

18. Sporting Lagos

Manager: Jeffrey Buter

Home turf: Mobolaji Johnson Arena

Style: Modern, data-driven

Sporting Lagos‘ data-driven approach extends from its football administration to its on-pitch work.

The club returns to the top flight following promotion from the Nigeria National League and will be hoping to establish itself quickly.

Coach Jeffrey Buter is expected to rely heavily on young players.

The club has strengthened the squad with Chinedu Sunday from Rivers United, Usman Mohammed from Sokoto United, Tamuno Kalio on loan from Shooting Stars, Daniel Aboh from Plateau United, Hadi Haruna from Remo Stars and Valentine Ugwu.

The club’s financial position has also been strengthened by the announcement of Kuda as its official headline sponsor for the 2026/27 campaign.

That could provide the financial stability needed to support the team’s ambitions.

19. Plateau United

Manager: Gbenga Ogunbote

Home turf: New Jos Stadium

Style: Pragmatic, resilient

Plateau United enter the new season with a new crest, fresh kits and renewed optimism.

The Peace Boys were relatively quiet in the transfer market, making just one major addition in Gideon Monday, a skilful winger who joined from Shooting Stars on a two-year free transfer.

Former Shooting Stars, Enyimba and Rangers International coach Gbenga Ogunbote was appointed before the second stanza of last season and will now have the opportunity to shape the team from the beginning of a full campaign.

His experience will be vital if Plateau United are to compete strongly in a highly competitive league.

20. Niger Tornadoes

Manager: Kabiru Suleiman Dogo

Home turf: Bako Kontagora Stadium

Style: Compact, gritty

Niger Tornadoes resumed full training at the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna on August 24 as preparations for the new campaign intensified.

The Ikon Allah Boys had trained away from Minna while the stadium underwent renovation and are now hoping to return home for the new season.

The ground is still expected to undergo NPFL inspection and approval before the campaign begins.

Niger Tornadoes will host Enyimba in Minna on Sunday, August 30, in one of the opening weekend fixtures.

The club has also conducted electrocardiogram tests on its players as part of the league’s registration requirements.
