The Award Presentation Ceremony of the winners of the 2018 edition of The Nigeria Prize for Literature and The Nigeria Prize for Science holds today, Friday, October 19, at Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotel, Victoria Island Lagos.
A public statement signed by Andy Odeh, Manager, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs, gave the start time as 5:30pm. He, however, explained that only those invited in advance are expected at the event.
The genre for the Literature Prize is Drama while the Science Prize focuses on ‘Innovations in Electric Power Solutions’.
The Nigeria Prize for Literature and The Nigeria Prize for Science are an annual competition established to recognise and reward excellent works in Literature by Nigerians and scientific Innovations aimed at solving Nigeria’s problems respectively. It is proudly sponsored by Nigeria LNG Limited and has since 2004 become recognised as Africa’s biggest prizes and an integral demonstration of NLNG’s commitment to help build a better Nigeria. The prizes have a monetary value of $100,000 to each of the winners.
The 2018 edition which commenced in February received 89 entries for the Literature prize while the Science prize took delivery of a record 84 entries. Following a thorough and time tested evaluation process, the Judges and the Advisory Boards of both prizes have produced a shortlist of three for each respectively. They include:
The Nigeria Prize for Literature:
Embers by Soji Cole published by Emotion Press; Death and The King’s Grey Hair by Denja Abdullahi published by Kraft Books; and The Rally by Akanji Nasiru published by Kraft Books.
The Nigeria Prize for Science:
Decoupled Control of Induction Motors, by Frank Nwoye Okafor and Balogun Adeola Olugbenga; All Solid State Liquid Sulphur Battery by Peter Ngene; and Novel Extractive Reactor Technology for Biodiesel Production from Waste Cooking Oil by Adesoji Adesina.
The winners will join the growing league of laureates which include eminent personalities such as Prof. Ezenwa Oheato & Dr. Gabrial Okara (2005), Dr. Ahmed Yerima (2006), Prof. Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo and Mabel Segun (2007), Kaine Agary (2008), Dr. Esiaba Irodi (2010), Mr. Adeleke Adeyemi (2011), Dr. Chika Unigwe (2012), Tade Ipadeola (2013), Prof. Sam Ukala (2014), Abubakar Adam Ibrahim (2016), Ikeogu Oke (2017) for The Nigeria Prize for Literature and Prof. Akpoveta Susu & Dr. Kingsley Abhulimen (2004), Prof. Michael Adikwu (2006), Dr. Ebenezer Meshida, Prof. Andrew Nok (2009), Prof. Ahaehomen Ibhadode (2010) and Ikeoluwapo Ajayi, Ayodele Jegede, Bidemi Yusuf & Olugbenga Mokuolu & Chukwuma Agubata (2017) for The Nigeria Prize for Science.
