Godwin Maduka
A Nigerian-America based medical doctor and philanthropist, Dr. Godwin Maduka, has handed over a N250m worth of judicial court complex he built in his country home, Umuchukwu, Orumba South Local Government Area, to the Anambra State Government.
The multi-million court edifice with a Judge’s quarters was built three years ago for the promotion of justice and fair hearing in the state but was left under lock and key following mounting petitions by an aggrieved section of the community.
Speaking at the event, Maduka regretted that the court which would have resumed activities three years was left lying fallow because of scarcity of judges in the state as well as series of petition.
While expressing joy that the court complex was finally being handed over to the state government, he stressed that the court was built for use and not to be locked up saying that certain pitfalls as experienced in Nigeria make people's effort to remain unfulfilled.
The medical director of Las Vegas Pain Institute said: “Now that the court is open and gazette, I believe that Judges will be sent here for judicial activities. It is now a judicial complex.”
In his speech, the Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, who was represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Harry Udu, commended the Anaesthesiologist for his contributions to the development of the state.
He noted that the gesture was in line with his Think Home philosophy and urged people of the state living all over the world to borrow a leaf from Maduka and invest.
Obiano said: “It is beautiful that it is happening in our state. We thank Dr. Maduka immensely. He is a philanthropist par excellence and this is just one of the many things he had done for his community and for Anambra State.”
In her remarks, the wife of late Dim Chukwuemrka Odumegeu Ojukwu, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, hailed Maduka for impacting positively on the lives of many people.
She said: “Igbos living in diaspora should not hesitate in bringing part of their wealth home as Dr. Maduka has done. In so doing, the high rate of poverty and unemployment in the state would be a thing of the past.”
On his part, a member of the Board of Trustees, BoT of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, called on both the state government and the judiciary to urgently put the court to good use.
“My appeal is that this effort should be encouraged. Dr. Maduka has spent fortunes to build this complex and since 2015, it has not been in use.
“I call on the state government and the state judiciary to identify and support this great man so that others can have the mind to follow suit.”
