Properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis have been destroyed following Monday night’s heavy rains leaving some residents of Taifa, a suburb of Accra devastated.

Shop owners and residents at Taifa junction could not salvage any of their properties as their homes and shops got flooded by the rain. Items ranging from television sets, computers, paints, provisions, clothes, among others were all destroyed by the rain leaving them in tears as they count their losses.

The rain which lasted several hours did not only destroy their properties but also rendered some of them homeless as they had no place to lay their heads for the night and are now wondering where to spend the next couple of nights as they clean their rooms.

Narrating their ordeal to GhanaWeb, the residents said due to the havoc the rain caused, their children could not go to school and in a tearful mood appealed to government and NADMO to come to their aid as they are helpless now.

One resident who could not hold his tears recounted how terrifying it was for him and his family as the flood water reached neck level in their home with their properties going under water. According to him, his family had to send their 12-day-old baby to a neighbour’s house for safety.

A shop owner lost both her shop (a container) and its contents when the flood dragged a taxi packed nearby to crash the shop and further dragged both away from the shop’s location.

Other parts of Accra that were also affected by the flood include East Legon Hills, main Nanakrom bridge, Haatso, Kaneshi, Kwabenya, Madina, Mataheko, Dome, Adenta, Ofankor, Weija, Ablekuma, Odawna, Adabraka, and Glefe were all affected.

Some social media users who got stranded as a result of the rains took to their social media platforms to share their experiences while showing photos of the floods in their areas.

Both private and commercial drivers who were caught up in the floods had to park somewhere and run to safety.
