The Control Tower of Kaduna International Airport in North-West Nigeria has been gutted by fire.
Our reporter gathered that the fire was caused by high electric voltage from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), which completely damaged the control tower.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started at about 3pm and was uncontrollable until the control tower was razed down.
A staffer at the airport, who pleaded anonymity, said: “Nobody could even make attempt to near the tower because of the force of fire. We had to run for safety first.
“The tower has been razed down completely; it cannot be used again.”
Reacting to the development, the General Manager, Corporate Communications of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Yakubu Dati, said: “The Kaduna airport has been temporary closed down following a minor fire incident at the control tower, which has since been brought under control with no casualties.
“A NOTAM has been issued following the prompt response of fire and rescue personnel at the airport.
“The NCAA, AIB, NAMA and other relevant agencies have since mobilised to site as investigation into the cause of the fire has commenced.”
