1999 Nigerian Constitution
A Civil Society Organisation, Change Movement Nigeria has translated the 1999 Nigerian Constitution into Igbo Language.
In a statement issued on Friday, Chair and Leader of the group, Damilola Adegoke said the Nigerian Constitution Access Project Committee of Change Movement Nigeria decided to embark on the project of translating the Constitution into native languages and also to provide its audio versions for easy access by native speakers, with the intention of opening up the democratic space for all citizens.
He pointed out that “Nigeria has a literacy rate of 59.6 percent. There are 40.4 percent Nigerians who cannot read and write. There are about 70 million Nigeria who cannot read and write.
“About 70 million Nigerians have been shut out of meaningful political participation because of their inability to read and understand the official language of the country – the English Language.
“In 2013, we translated the constitution into Yoruba Language and also made available audio recordings of selected chapters of the Constitution.
“We are glad to provide our translations free for all. Volunteering opportunities are available for linguists, language experts, and translators to help advance the cause of opening up the political space for all citizens of our great nations.
