Two weeks after five of the seven aggrieved state governors of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), indications have emerged that some of them are not committed to their new party.

Last night, Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and his Sokoto counterpart Aliyu Wamakko came out in the open to identify with the PDP by attending the rescheduled peace meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting which started at about 10:40 p.m., was attended by 15 other PDP state governors, namely, Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); Jonah Jang (Plateau); Mukhtar Yero (Kaduna); Theodore Orji (Abia); Sa’idu Dakingari (Kebbi); Idris Wada (Kogi); Ibrahim Shema (Katsina); Isa Yuguda (Bauchi); Sullivan Chime (Enugu); Liyel Imoke (Cross River); Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom); Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta); Martins Elechi (Ebonyi); and Taraba Acting Governor Garba Umaru.

Indications are that at least one other defected governor is also considering returning to the PDP, according to President Jonathan. Speaking Saturday evening in France, Jonathan had said that only two of the seven rebel governors had confirmed leaving PDP.

“Out of the remaining five, two appear that they’ve actually moved to the other political party; while some are still on the fence. I believe in the couples of weeks, it will not be too long, it will be very clear whether they’re leaving or not,” the President said.

Jonathan did not give the names of those who had confirmed leaving but he is believed to have been referring to Murtala Nyako of Adamawa and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers, both of whom have publicly announced their defection.
