The Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON), the umbrella professional body for Guidance Counsellors in Nigeria, will commemorate its Golden Jubilee (50th Anniversary) from 16th to 21st August 2026 at the Ibom Hall in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, marking five decades of transformative contributions to national development through professional counselling practice.
A statement jointly issued by Julius Lambert Nyananyo, Chairman, Media and Publicity Sub-Committee and Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Prof Ayo Hammed, of the 50th Golden Jubilee Anniversary emphasised:
“At 50, we celebrate a legacy of impact while reaffirming our commitment to positioning counselling as a strategic driver of sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.”
With the theme:
“Counselling Practice for Sustainable Livelihood and Development”
The milestone celebration will convene leading experts, policymakers, educators, and mental health professionals to explore the critical role of counselling in shaping resilient individuals and sustainable societies.
A major highlight of the celebration is the Golden Jubilee Lecture titled:
“Counselling Practice in Nigeria: Reflections, Achievements and Future Direction” to be delivered by renowned scholar and Board of Trustees member, Prof Frank Carew.
Since its establishment in 1976, CASSON has remained a cornerstone in advancing counselling education, professional ethics, and mental health awareness across Nigeria.
The Association has played a vital role in strengthening educational systems, promoting emotional well-being, and supporting national productivity.
The week-long event will feature: International Conference and Technical Sessions, Golden Jubilee Lecture, Awards and Recognition Ceremony, Policy and Stakeholder Dialogues, and Community Mental Health Campaigns.
The association is calling on governments, development partners, and the private sector to strengthen investment in counselling services as a critical tool for addressing modern socio-economic and psychological challenges.
