The Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to the people of Nigeria, whose mandate the lawmakers exercise as their elected representatives.

According to a statement issued in Abujaon Wednesdayby Senator Aliyu Wamakko, “The Senate will continue to act as always in the overall and best interest of Nigeria and Nigerians.

“On the issue of Col. Hameed Ali, the Comptroller General of Customs, the Senate is unanimous that his action is an affront on the legislative arm of government. And an affront on the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

“Under a military government, Col. Hameed Ali would not dare refuse the instructions of his Commanding Officer. He would definitely be charged for treason and court marshalled.

“Col. Hameed Ali is not above the law and cannot claim to love Nigeria more than 170 million Nigerians, whose mandate we exercise. The Senate will no longer tolerate affronts on its power.”

News Expressreports that the embattled Hameed Ali again failed to show up before the Senateon Wednesday. During the plenary, Senate President, Bukola Saraki read Ali’s letter saying he was bereaved and could not show up before the Senate.

The CG Customs met with the Senate President behind closed-dooron Tuesday evening. But the lawmakers kicked and called on the Senate leadership to compel Ali to appear before the upper house today,Thursday, March 16,2017, or risk being arrested.

Some of the senators who kicked against Ali’s decision said the institution cannot afford to join issues with him but will compel him to do as the lawmakers want.
