Authorities in California say incest and murder surround the chilling case of a newborn found dead and dumped on the side of the road. They are searching for the baby’s 14-year-old mother and her father, who is also alleged to be the baby’s father.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a newborn baby was found dead Aug. 1 on the side of a road near Moss Landing. The baby, whom investigators are calling “Baby Angelita,” still had her umbilical cord attached and showed signs of trauma.
Arrest warrants were issued Monday for Baby Angelita’s 14-year-old mother and the teenager’s father, 38-year-old Sergio Galves Perez. Investigators say Perez is also the father of Baby Angelita. He is wanted on several charges, including incest, while his daughter is wanted on a murder charge.
Authorities say Perez is believed to be on the run with his daughter, whom he allegedly impregnated when she was 13 years old.
“We just need the public’s help to locate the 14-year-old, so we can get her to safety and then listen to her side of the story,” Sheriff Tina Nieto said. “And we need to locate Mr. Perez, because in my opinion, he’s a serious felon offender, a parent who betrayed everything, every piece of trust that a child puts in their parent.”
A breakthrough In the case came when Flock cameras identified a car related to the investigation, which was registered to Perez and his wife, 36-year-old Ofelia Garcia Ortega. Authorities say Ortega has been arrested and charged with child endangerment.
“I can say without that information we received from that camera, we may have never solved that case. So, that was very instrumental in solving this case, especially the speed in which it was done Without it, [it] may have taken years or never,” Chief Deputy Eric Bixler said.
Investigators say the 14-year-old may be in danger while on the run with her father.
“I believe the 14-year-old might be in danger. That’s my gut feeling as a sheriff. She’s 14, for God’s sake. She’s 14. She’s a victim, too, even though she’s a suspect,” Nieto said.
