Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has sought the intervention of the Police Service Commission (PSC) to address imbalances in the Nigeria Police Force’s rank structure and challenges affecting officers’ career progression.
Disu made the appeal when he visited the Chairman of the PSC, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd.), as part of efforts to strengthen institutional cooperation and improve personnel management in the Force.
The IGP particularly called for joint action to address challenges affecting the Inspectorate cadre, while advocating sustained engagement on the review of the Force’s Scheme of Service.
He said such a review would promote fairness, transparency and merit in personnel administration.
Disu also commended the Commission for recognising the sacrifices and contributions of police personnel, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to constructive engagement with the statutory commission.
He stressed the need for closer collaboration in handling personnel matters while respecting the distinct responsibilities of both institutions.
A statement on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said the PSC chairman described the visit as timely and assured the IGP that the issues raised would receive the Commission’s attention.
Argungu emphasised that mutual understanding and respect for institutional responsibilities were essential to strengthening cooperation and supporting the police in discharging their security mandate.
He also expressed the Commission’s readiness to work with the Force on the review of the Scheme of Service and personnel development.
The PSC chairman stressed the importance of merit, competence and performance in recruitment and promotion, adding that capacity development was necessary to prepare officers for the demands of modern policing.
The Force said the engagement underscored its commitment to sustained collaboration with the Commission to strengthen personnel administration, promote professionalism and improve service delivery to the public. (The Nation)
