Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries
Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has vowed to hold President Donald Trump’s administration accountable after Democrats won control of both chambers of the United States Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
Jeffries, who is expected to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives, accused the Trump administration of operating an “out-of-control executive branch” and alleged widespread corruption.
He also vowed to investigate members of the administration and hold those responsible accountable.
“We are going to hold the crooks accountable,” Jeffries said, accusing what he called the “Trump Cartel” of massive corruption.
The Democratic victory gave the party control of both the Senate and House of Representatives for the remainder of Trump’s presidency, shifting the balance of power in Washington.
The results marked a major setback for Republicans, although counting remained incomplete in several House races on Wednesday.
Of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives, results had been declared in most constituencies, while 24 races remained outstanding.
Contests in Tennessee, Louisiana and Virginia were still too close to call, while several districts in Arizona, California and Colorado were also awaiting final results.
Reacting to the Republican defeat, Trump acknowledged that the war involving Iran was largely responsible for his party’s poor performance.
His admission followed comments by Vice-President JD Vance, who said the conflict was a major reason Republicans lost the elections.
The election outcome also affected financial markets, with oil prices falling to their lowest level in two months following the results. (Arise News)
