Nigerias envoy to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim AND Ondo Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Nations, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, has questioned the meaning and implications of Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s repeated declaration, “I am the Governor,” raising concerns about power, leadership and governance.
Ibrahim, who holds a doctorate from the University of Cambridge, made the observations in an article titled ‘I am the Governor’ – Ayedatiwa: Navigating Classic Hegemonic Praxis and Power-Currency Dynamics.’
In the article, Ibrahim examined the relationship between political authority and the exercise of power, drawing comparisons with historical European monarchs, including King Henry VIII of England and King Louis XIII of France.
He noted that rulers in earlier periods often exercised power without the constraints associated with modern democratic governance, using historical examples to illustrate the consequences of unchecked authority.
According to him, political realists traditionally viewed power as the principal currency of political relations, while subjects had limited opportunities to challenge the authority of monarchs.
However, Ibrahim questioned whether Aiyedatiwa’s repeated assertion of his position as governor should be interpreted as an expression of authority or as a reflection of his approach to leadership.
“Sometimes, the public describes a liberalist like Governor Aiyedatiwa as a realist, especially highlighting his frequent assertion, ‘I am the Governor’,” he wrote.
He argued that the governor’s approach to governance should also be assessed in terms of collaboration and cooperation in formulating policies and managing the state’s collective resources.
“Despite his straightforwardness, they often dismiss his approach to collaboration and cooperation in shaping state policy for everyone’s good. If we overlook these efforts, the alternative of using power currency is inevitable, God forbid!” Ibrahim stated.
The ambassador suggested that Aiyedatiwa was increasingly appreciating the importance of cooperation and collective decision-making in addressing Ondo State’s needs.
He also raised questions about the distribution of resources among communities, particularly the Ilaje people, arguing that the interests of different groups should be considered in the governance process.
“Even at the peak of his power, Governor Aiyedatiwa is gradually returning to an appreciation of the praxis of liberalism, as Ondo needs more collaboration and cooperation in sharing collective resources; even if the Ilaje people take more, who cares, and if they take little, who will fight for them?” he asked.
Ibrahim further questioned whether the governor’s declaration was primarily an assertion of political authority or an indication of a particular leadership philosophy.
“Does performance mean power to Governor Aiyedatiwa, or is ‘I am the Governor’ an announcement of new authority in town? Is Governor Aiyedatiwa a neo-realist or a classic realist?” he asked.
The article framed the debate around the distinction between realism, which emphasises power and political interests, and liberalism, which places greater emphasis on cooperation and collective action. (Nigerian Tribune)
