President Tinubu and FCT Minister Wike
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday declared that major political heavyweights and stakeholders across party lines are fully mobilised to ensure a landslide victory for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Addressing a high-powered stakeholders’ meeting at his official residence in Abuja, the FCT Minister maintained that true leadership is defined by hard decision-making rather than mere rhetoric.
Drawing on recent political history, Wike detailed how a strategic cross-party coalition halted former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseke from installing his successor, offering a blueprint for future political engagements.
Recalling the fierce political showdown in Edo State, Wike said the defeat of the incumbent administration resulted from a calculated alliance between legacy PDP elements and the APC.
“In the last election that took place in Edo State, the victory was as a result of the coalition between the legacy PDP and the APC,” Wike stated.
He said, “We had to work together to make sure that the former governor, Governor Masake, did not produce his successor, and that is the truth. I was behind it, and I don’t have any regrets about it”.
Dismissing critics who downplay the efficacy of coalitions, Wike asserted that political realities demand pragmatism.
He noted that figures like Senator Adams Oshiomhole and other key leaders witnessed how united forces dismantled entrenched interests.
“So, when people say that nothing is like coalition, they tell lies,” Wike asserted.
He said, “The truth of the matter is that it has been there depending on how it is worked out”.
Wike argued that the Tinubu administration has fundamentally transformed the FCT through aggressive infrastructural development and long-overdue institutional reforms.
He noted that establishing the FCT Civil Service Commission has completely altered career progression for civil servants.
“No president has ever done this. When this president came, and I met him, I said, sir, FCT is to be like a state. They should have their own Civil Service Commission,” Wike noted.
He said, “Today, FCT has its own head of service, appointed from the civil servants… and we have no fewer than six permanent secretaries. That alone is a disincentive to failure and makes workers put in their best”.
Highlighting physical development across the satellite towns—including ongoing road construction such as the critical Apo-Karshi road, slated for completion, school renovations, and the establishment of new police stations with accommodation—Wike challenged detractors to point to any area council untouched by the current administration.
Reiterating his unwavering stance on the 2027 presidential race, Wike charged all political structures across the FCT to put aside party differences and deliver total support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The minister said, “Whether you are in PDP, FCT, or in APC, FCT, we are going to work together to achieve the same result. For the purpose of this election, we are all together”.
Expressing confidence in his mandate as the FCT election coordinator, Wike assured stakeholders that all obstacles have been cleared to secure a resounding victory at the polls, emphasising, “Every obstacle, I’ve already removed it. Whatever is required to do the election, we will have it. Everything that is required.” (The Nation)
