NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi
By BONIFACE AKARAH
The Peter Obi Media Office (POMR) has condemned reports of intimidation and political violence in Enugu State, calling for an impartial investigation into alleged politically motivated killings and the prosecution of anyone found responsible, regardless of political affiliation or position.
In a statement dated October 11, 2026, and signed electronically by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, the group accused political actors of allowing violence and intimidation to undermine democratic participation, urging security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents.
POMR said the All Progressives Congress (APC) should focus on presenting its record in government and seeking voters’ support through democratic means rather than allowing fear to shape the political process.
“If the APC has accomplishments to present, it should disclose them to Nigerians. If it enjoys the people’s confidence, it should face them at the ballot box,” the statement said.
The group described the persistent reports of intimidation in Enugu as unacceptable, arguing that political competition should be based on governance records, ideas and public confidence rather than violence.
It further alleged that some state governors were presiding over political violence in which citizens were losing their lives for electoral gain, insisting that such incidents required an immediate and thorough investigation.
“The ongoing violence in Enugu demands an immediate and comprehensive investigation—not excuses, unchecked denials, or political concealment,” POMR stated.
The organisation called on security agencies to investigate credible allegations of politically motivated killings, threats and attacks impartially, without fear or favour.
It also urged investigators to establish who may have ordered, funded, enabled or carried out any such acts, adding that those found culpable should face prosecution in accordance with the law.
“Holding public office must never shield anyone from justice, and political affiliation must never determine whose life is valued or who is held accountable for a crime,” the statement added.
POMR also called on electoral and law enforcement authorities to take preventive measures against political violence, protect opposition candidates and supporters, and guarantee that citizens could participate in the democratic process without fear.
The group said victims and their families deserved justice, while the public was entitled to clear and transparent answers about the reported incidents.
“There must be no misunderstanding: no governor is above the law, no political party owns the state, and no political aspiration can justify the loss of even one Nigerian life,” the statement declared.
POMR maintained that attempts to intimidate political opponents should be resisted through lawful and peaceful democratic action, warning that citizens must not surrender their constitutional rights because of threats or violence.
“Our message is clear: account for your record, answer for your conduct, and face the Nigerian people—not the barrel of a gun,” Zekeri said.
The group urged political leaders to earn public trust through their performance, respect for human life and commitment to the rule of law, stressing that electoral competition must not come at the expense of citizens’ safety.
