Chiamaka Nwakalor-Egemba
Chiamaka Nwakalor-Egemba, wife of Nigerian doctor and health influencer Egemba Chinonso Fidelis popularly known as Aproko doctor, has spoken about the challenges she faced after receiving a Chef Amaka PCOS diagnosis just three months into her marriage.
During an interview, Amaka, popularly known as Chef Amaka, said she got married in June and became concerned after missing her menstrual period. She visited a hospital, where doctors confirmed she had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
“I just got married to my husband in June. Three months into the marriage, I didn’t see my period. Then I went to the hospital, they told me I had PCOS,” she recalled.
According to Amaka, the condition led to changes in her body, including weight gain and a broader upper-body appearance.
She said the changes attracted negative comments from some people, who claimed she looked older than her husband.
“I started having upper body structure. Then I started adding weight. When my husband and I stand, I looked way older. I was told I am the man of the house, that I beat my husband,” she said.
Amaka also shared how comments about her inability to conceive affected her emotionally.
She said some people questioned her husband’s masculinity because they had not welcomed a child.
“What made me cry was when they said my husband is not man enough to father a child. In my head, I’m like all this because I’ve never conceived,” she said.
PCOS is a hormonal condition that can affect menstrual cycles, fertility and weight, among other symptoms. (Nigerian Tribune)
