Members of the House of Representatives caucus of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) yesterday reaffirmed their loyalty to the party.
They promised to intensify opposition against the Federal Government ahead of the 2027 general election.
The lawmakers, led by House Minority Leader Victor Afam Ogene, spoke during a visit to the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, at his Abuja residence.
Among those in the delegation were George Ozodinobi, Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, Lillian Orogbu, Atta Thaddeous Achief, Chijioke Okereke, Peter Ozokwe, Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, Emeka Idu, Manuchim Omezuruike, Muktar Umar Zakari, Yusuf Umar Datti, Peter Aniekwe, and Uchenna Harris Okonkwo.
Also present at the meeting were the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor and ex-presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside other leaders of the party.
Speaking on behalf of the caucus, Ogene said the visit was meant to reassure the party’s leadership of the lawmakers’ commitment to the ideals of the NDC and their resolve to provide effective opposition in the interest of Nigerians.
“This evening, we are here as members of the House of Representatives Caucus of the NDC to reassure you of our commitment to serve the people of Nigeria in keeping with the motto of our party: service to the people,” he said.
The Minority Leader stressed that the caucus would continue to hold the government accountable to ensure good governance and democratic dividends for Nigerians.
“In rendering this service, we will hold the government of the day accountable to the people so that they would render to the Nigerian people the basic necessities associated with democracy and civil rule,” he stated.
Ogene described the NDC as the leading opposition force in the House of Representatives, expressing confidence that the growing strength of the party would amplify its voice both nationally and internationally.
“We are now the major opposition party in Parliament, especially the House of Representatives, from where we operate, and with this number our voice will be strengthened. It will be heard across Nigeria and beyond to hold the government to its responsibilitie,” he added.
According to him, the leadership of the caucus’s unwavering loyalty to the NDC and the Nigerian people remains firm.
Responding on behalf of Dickson and other party leaders, Kwankwaso praised the lawmakers for their loyalty and steadfastness.
The NDC stalwart described loyalty as a rare virtue in contemporary Nigerian politics.
“We have to thank you for the loyalty, which, of course, is a very rare commodity these days. We appreciate you and we want to assure you on behalf of the leader and the party that we will continue to do whatever it takes to carry you along so that together we can succeed,” Kwankwaso said.
The former Kano governor also urged Nigerians to register with the NDC and obtain their voter cards ahead of the 2027 elections.
He urged party members to return to their constituencies and intensify grassroots mobilisation, particularly among youths and supporters seeking political change. (The Nation)
