Gunmen on Monday night ambushed and killed a 300-level university student in Dum Village, Bachi District of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack reportedly occurred when the armed men positioned themselves at the entrance of the village and opened fire on two young men, killing one while the other escaped.
The victim was identified as Badung Sunday Alamba, a 29-year-old 300-level student of the Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State. He was said to be the only child of his mother.
A community member, Mr. Dung Elisha, described the incident as tragic, noting that the deceased’s companion, Dachomo Habila, narrowly escaped despite attempts by the attackers to kill him.
“He was the only child of his mother,” Elisha said.
Rwang Tengwong, National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the attack and condemned it, describing it as a “premeditated, calculated and barbaric assault on innocent civilians.”
He alleged that the attackers deliberately targeted Berom communities in Riyom, Barkin Ladi and Jos South Local Government Areas.
Tengwong called for a thorough investigation into the killing and urged security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and their sponsors without delay.
He also appealed for strengthened surveillance and improved protection for vulnerable communities that have repeatedly come under attack.
Efforts to reach the spokesman of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. (Guardian)
