The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a four-point demand to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling for urgent action while threatening to pursue legal redress if its concerns are ignored.
The demands were presented on Wednesday at INEC headquarters in Abuja during a protest by party leaders and supporters, led by National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola.
At the centre of the dispute is the conduct of INEC Chairman, Joseph Amupitan, whom the party accused of partisanship, constitutional breaches, and actions capable of undermining Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
The ADC’s four-point demand includes the immediate resignation or removal of the INEC chairman, withdrawal of what it described as “offensive correspondence” sent to the party, a formal apology from the Commission, and a commitment to refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of political parties.
The party criticised the INEC chairman for allegedly interpreting court rulings publicly, insisting that such responsibility lies solely with the judiciary and that any deviation undermines constitutional order.
According to the ADC, recent actions by the Commission have raised serious concerns about its neutrality, especially amid ongoing internal disputes within the party.
“Your recent media interview was not only disgraceful and unbecoming of the high office you occupy, but it also exposed a troubling willingness to descend into partisan controversy,” the party told the INEC chairman.
“The interpretation of court judgments is the exclusive preserve of the judiciary. For the Chairman of INEC to publicly assume that role… amounts to a serious constitutional breach,” the party stated.
The leadership maintained that its current structure emerged from transparent processes, including National Executive Committee meetings held in 2025, which it said were duly communicated to INEC and acknowledged at the time.
However, the party alleged that there are now attempts to reverse earlier positions, warning that such actions could damage the credibility of the electoral body.
“We are aware of efforts being made to recant their testimonies which contradict the agenda that you have decided to pursue. This is indeed unconscionable,” the party stated.
While acknowledging the role of other officials within INEC, the ADC said the chairman’s conduct has eroded public trust in the institution.
The party warned that failure to meet its demands would trigger judicial proceedings and coordinated civic action, stressing that it would exhaust all lawful means to ensure accountability and protect Nigeria’s democratic system.
“Take note that failure to comply will leave us with no option but to activate all lawful and constitutional mechanisms to ensure accountability.
“The integrity of Nigeria’s democracy cannot and will not be sacrificed on the altar of institutional compromise,” the party said. (The Sun)
