The Vice Chancellor of University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Offiong Offiong, has declared a sweeping crackdown on admission irregularities, certificate racketeering and other entrenched malpractices in the institution, warning that perpetrators will be exposed and prosecuted.
Speaking at a press briefing today at the Senate Chambers to herald the university’s 38th convocation, Offiong said the administration has already begun disciplinary action against officials linked to over-admission, insisting that the era of unchecked abuses is over.
“We have taken a firm position, no more over-admissions. The officer under whose watch this persisted is currently facing disciplinary action,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor also revealed that the university is closing in on individuals involved in forging certificates and signatures of past principal officers, describing them as “enemies” of the institution.
“We are tracking those behind the printing of fake certificates in business centres. Once apprehended, we will not hesitate to expose them,” he added.
He said despite the reform push, the institution is set to graduate no fewer than 10,820 students during its 38th convocation ceremony scheduled to hold between April 2 and April 12, 2026.
Beyond the numbers, Offiong said the convocation marks a defining moment for his administration, being the first under his leadership since assuming office in December 2025.
He reiterated that his vision for the institution is anchored on excellence, innovation and integrity, with a strong emphasis on restoring public confidence in its systems.
As part of immediate reforms, the VC disclosed that the Central Admissions Committee has been reinstated to ensure transparency and strict adherence to approved quotas.
He stressed that employment processes in the university would henceforth be merit-driven, open and subject to regulatory approvals, warning members of the public against paying for jobs or admission.
Offiong further revealed that UNICAL has commenced a comprehensive digitalisation of its records and operations, aimed at addressing long-standing challenges in transcript processing, verification and administrative efficiency.
He added that efforts are also underway to tackle infrastructural deficits, improve student welfare, strengthen campus security and enhance teaching and learning facilities.
The Vice Chancellor acknowledged that while the reforms are still at an early stage, the administration remains committed to reversing years of negative perceptions associated with the institution.
As part of the convocation programme, a lecture on national security will be delivered by Garba Ayodeji Wahab, focusing on the role of tertiary institutions in addressing the country’s security challenges.
Other activities lined up include a research fair and exhibition, alumni engagements, award of degrees and diplomas, as well as the conferment of honorary degrees and the launch of an endowment fund. (The Guardian)
